Took my 50mm frac Shrimpy and my tent to a nearby darker site (campground) Thursday night. It's shown as a Bortle 5 and it is darker than home, but the schmutz from Chicago still reaches up to 25-30* above the eastern horizon and I was only able to see Kochab and Pherkad in Ursa Minor by naked eye.

It was dark enough though to pick out The Engagement Ring asterism near Polaris, which I haven't been able to do at home. This is also in Sue French's book where she describes it as a circlet of 8-9th mag stars next to Polaris that looks like a ring with Polaris as the diamond. Stellarium capture below.

Glad you were able to capture this, good one.
I’ve learned a lot since I knew it all.
150mm Orion Mak-Cass, Orion StarSeeker IV GoTo mount, Telrad.
Orion 10 & 23mm (set 1.25), Explore Scientific 9 & 18mm, 2x GSO Barlow, just purchased 2” Orion twist diagonal, GSO 32mm plossl and Agena 8-24 zoom.

Another fine asterism Olen. One of the most stumbled upon asterism is coming this summer with Collinder 399 or "The Coathanger" in Vulpecula. It is always a curious sight and catches the eye of beginners and veterans alike.

Yes, I use The Coathanger as my starting point when navigating to eclipsing binary U Sge which I try to observe whenever visibility and weather permit.

Hi Olen. Another gem of a report with the Engagement Ring Asterism (also found in Sue French's book) with the Shrimpy 50mm refractor and light glow from Chicago. I used to live in Momence, IL. before moving to Florida and I could still see it to the north, just above the horizon from 55 miles away. Thanks for sharing another great observing report with us on here Olen and the best of wishes for many clear night skies.
