HOW EMBARRASING! I forgot I had already processed this once before and submitted it earlier this month! Don't get old if you can help it!

Here's my new SHO version using PixInsight.

PROCESSING STEPS:
Crop
Background extraction (ABE) on individual images
Noise reduction (MultiscaleLinearTransform) on individual images
Stretch images:
  • Initial stretch with HistogramTransformation on individual images to match stars and background
  • Create starless versions of SHO images and save the separated stars
  • Use RangeSelection on starless O2 and S3 to create masks to select only important regions of nebulosity
  • Finish stretching S2 and O3 images with the RangeSelection masks in place using HistogramTransformation
Create SHO image using ChannelCombination (Red=S2, Green=Ha and Blue=O3)
Use SCNR to remove green
Increase color saturation using CurvesTransformation with the "S" option
Use HistogramTransformation to adjust black levels to achieve neutral background
Reduce noise with TGVDenoise and an inverted luminance mask to protect high-signal regions

Sharpen and enhance contrast of starless Ha image
  • Sharpen with MultiscaleLinearTransform
  • Enhance contrast with LocalHistogramEqualization
Slightly blur SHO image using Convolution
Apply LRGBCombination to SHO image with sharpened Ha image used as "L", leave RGB unchecked

Combine Ha and O3 stars as HOO image
Run ColorCalibration on HOO stars image
Add HOO Stars to SHO_LRGB image
DONE

Nice job guys. I like both versions better than my original go at it.

Steve, getting old sure beats the alternative. :)

Yup! Don't like the alternative at all!!!

Here's a softer version of my last attempt.

These are great Steve. I think your third is my favourite as the bubble is so nice and crisp.

It always amazes me how we can get such different end results from the same data. What was the main difference in processing that resulted in the big change from your original version to these new, blue ones?

I actually used the same general approach for the first and second images. I must have just stretched the Blue channel more when I did the processing for the second image. It wasn't a conscious processing choice! The third image is just the second image with the black level move up to hide the background noise and the color saturation reduced a little. Sorry, no real attempt to increase the blue. Just shows how even using the same approach doesn't always produce "identical" results.

Thanks Steve. I know what you mean. Infact I find it a bit disconcerting when I try to do an update to an image to add in some new data, planning to get to the same endpoint just better, and I end up with something not even close to the first one

I've now started saving everything as pixinsight project just so I can step back through the first process if I need to. But I'll soon need a new HDD.

I have exactly the same problem David. Maybe we are the only ones who will admit it?
I haven't saved anything as a PixInsight Project for exactly the reason you mention - storage space!!!!

Good luck,

Steve
