Elephant's Trunk - More Time (DSLR)

#1

Post by STEVE333 »

Beautiful night last night, and, system worked great. Guiding was about 1" rms which is good for me.

Total exposure is up to 4 hr 48 min. I processed the image using normal DSLR processing. The resulting image is a nice improvement over the earlier post which had only 1 hr 21 min total exposure. I'll be looking into processing as a NB image next (same data, just a different processing approach).

IMAGE PARAMETERS
WO Star71 telescope, Canon T3 (modified), STC Duo-Narrowband Filter, iOptron CEM40 EC Mount
Lights 32x540 sec (Total Exp 4 hr 48 min), Darks, SuperBias, Master Flat
BYEOS, PHD2, PixInsight

Out of interest, the image below shows the Rejection_High image from the PixInsight ImageIntegration process. These are all the rejected pixels that were more than 3-sigma larger than the average. This rejection is done for each pixel of each image. Notice that all of the airplane trails are rejected. I'm right in the flight path for planes landing at the San Jose, CA airport. The trails are all removed (none evident in the final image), and, I never discard an image because of airplane trails.

Thanks for looking.

Wow, HUGE improvement!

That’s a bunch of time. How long do you pause between exposures for sensor cooling?

Great image Steve. Looking forward to your next one!

Thanks,
Jim

BYE THE WAY - THIS DATA WAS COLLECTED WITH AN AVERAGE MOON PHASE OF 85%!!!

The Duo-Narrowband really acts like a SUPER LP filter.

That looks great! The amount of exposure is quite a lot but the number of subs is still "only" 32 so it would be exciting to see your result if you want to pursue this one further. Why I write this is because my experience with the Canon DSLRs is that at about 60-80 subs things REALLY start to happen. The images get so much cleaner and easier to process.

Thanks Jim. I use dithering, so, the time between images is about 60 sec.

Thank you Martin.

Was your number of 60-80 subs at all dependent upon the length of exposures you took?

It is very difficult for me to get that many subs. I can only capture the Eastern portion of the sky, so that's one limit to the number of subs. Each sub needs to be at least 9 min long because of the narrow bands of the Ha and Oiii passbands, so, that also limits the number of subs. Lastly, at 78, how long I can stay up at night before "pooping out" also limits the number of subs. Of course clouds etc. play their role. I may be able to get out tonight for another 3hr 40min window of opportunity. At 10 min/image (including the dithering + settling time) that will be another 22 subs for a total of 32+22=54. Still shy of your 60-80 subs, but, maybe close enough? The total exposure would be just over 8 hrs. We'll see if my body agrees with my heart on this one tonight. May be a "game time" decision.

Appreciate your comments and suggestion.

60-80 is not at all a fixed amount but I remember it being easier somewhere around there. Somewhere along the line you get to where the extra subs don´t really do that much. 54 will also bee good :) I found 5 minute subs to be somewhat of a sweet spot but that was for RGB. Narrowband is another beast and I used 10 minute subs for that.

No need to tell me about the weather and the "pooping out", I´m only 44 and I still have a hard time motivating myself to stay up all night
