Moon, 9 and 10 August

#1

Post by bladekeeper »

Man, it has been raining and raining and raining. Finally, on Friday, the rain stopped. The clouds were still hanging around though.

Despite the clouds, the forecast was calling from some clearing. I had my doubts but I set up for lunar imaging anyway. That can be a get in, get it done, get out sort of affair. As poor as the sky was, that is what I was counting on.

That’s not what I got. I managed to get my full disk capture done easily enough as well as the top panel for my three-panel mosaic. After that, the clouds swarmed in and stayed with me. Of particular frustration was one long and narrow swath of cloud that angled right toward the Moon and traveled its whole length across the lunar disk. Why does that happen?

I waited that out. I managed to get the other two mosaic panels captured during cloud gaps. On the last image, I threw in the 3× focal extender hoping for a decent closer-in view of Copernicus. The clouds really didn’t want that to finish. A gap would open, grab some frames, gab would begin closing, pause the capture, so on and so forth.

What should have been 10 minutes of work took about 45 minutes.

Here is Friday night’s full disk:
20190809-21_04_19_g4_ap3103.png
And the mosaic (be sure to click the Flickr image again to blow it up for detail):

And the closer Copernicus capture:
20190809-21_22_14_g4_ap5618.png
Saturday night was much clearer, though it was swamp-butt humid and hot. Transparency was trash and some popcorn clouds turned up here and there. Not a good night to be out with a scope.

I managed a full disk capture and another mosaic.

And that’s about it. Too trashy for visual observing (what else is new?) and too unreliable for long-exposure imaging.

Oh, these were all done with the following:

Scope: Stellarvue SV102T
Cam: ZWO ASI174MC
Mount: Celestron AVX

2× barlow was used for the mosaic and a 3× focal extender for the close-up on Copernicus. Each capture and mosaic panel were done as 1000-frame SER files and the best 10% of each were stacked with Autostakkert! and off to Registax for a touch of wavelets. Photoshop trimmed any stacking artifacts and Microsoft Image Composite Editor assembled the mosaics. :)

Nice work Bryan!

You really did I a fine job of pulling in some fine lunar images despite lousy conditions.

Yeah, raining here too. No clearing anytime soon, but you never know.

Great images dude!

Thanks,
Jim

Nice images Bryan! Yeah, what is the deal with the clouds heading at the Moon? I've noticed that as well. The whole sky can be cloud-free, except for around ol' Luna. I think it's the light that attracts them...
Glad you beat them out, though. Your skies sound like mine; though last night at about 3:30 AM it was just over 50F here. Finally, I could sit in a T-shirt and no mosquitoes!

Hope it clears for ya. Your Unitron needs some light...;)

All the best buddy,
Mark

Thanks, friends!

Well, dang, not sure why the Flickr links are not working.

Set up again right now. Hot and humid and the transparency looks like someone tried to smear chicken poop on a hot windshield with a Kleenex...but I’m gonna do it anyway.

We are gluttons for punishment sometimes, I think. :D
