Brett's Carbon Star Hunt - February 2022

#1

Post by KingNothing13 »

Hi All - a little late this month, but "better late than never" or some such nonsense! :)

This month's targets, good luck and I hope your weather isn't as garbage as mine!

Y HYA: 8.3 - 12

Y Hydrae is a 6th magnitude Variable Star appearing in the constellation Hydra. It is 1269 light years from our solar system. It is a red star of spectral type C5,5. Its energy output is 276 times the Sun's luminosity.

Y Hydrae is a pulsating semi-regular variable star of type SRB. Its magnitude varies from +8.3 to +12.0, over a period of 302.8 days.

Data: Here.

Observations:Here.

HD 113801: 8.5

Not a variable - so there will be no data on this one, I guess!

HD 113801 is a 8th magnitude Star appearing in the constellation Virgo. It is 2118 light years from our solar system. It is a orange giant of spectral type K0IIICNIab. Its surface temperature is 4660 Kelvins - 19% cooler than the Sun's - and it is 22.3 times the Sun's diameter in size. This star's total energy output, or luminosity, is 211 times the Sun's, and it has a mass of 1.1 Solar masses.

No data or Observations from AAVSO as it is not a variable - so you're on your own! :)

RV MON: 9.71 - 11.9

RV Monocerotis is a 7th magnitude Variable Star appearing in the constellation Monoceros. It is 1699 light years from our solar system. It is a red star of spectral type C5,4. Its energy output is 243 times the Sun's luminosity.

RV Monocerotis is a pulsating semi-regular variable star of type SRB. Its magnitude varies from +9.7 to +11.9, over a period of 131.5 days.

Data: Here.

Observations: Here.

Thanks for posting this month's list Brett. If I get a clear sky I will definitely be out there. (Unfortunately I don't know when that will be!)

My weather has not been 'co-operating' until the last few days. I have a target I'm trying to gather data on, as soon as I'm done I will give this months Carbon star challenge a shot.

It has been way too cold here since the beginning of January - except for 2-3 nights, but it was warmer those nights because it was cloudy and nasty as well.

So there's that....
