Need Some DSO help

#1

Post by Jnicholes »

Hi everyone,

Long shot question, but please hear me out.

Today, I was going through my astronomy photos I took, and I found one picture I took that I did not label. By this, I mean I forgot to write down the objects name.

Here is the picture:
Unknown object
Unknown object
Its a beautiful picture, as you can see. I just have no clue what it is. I forgot.

Here is the long shot question, can someone possibly ID this object so I can label it?

Here are some clues I have:

I am pretty sure it is a Messier Object

Picture was taken on 09/21/2021 at 9:07 PM with an 80mm refractor 900mm focal length and a 21mm eyepiece. Camera was my phones app called Nightcap.

GPS coordinates of the telescopes location at that date and time is 114 15' 32" W and 42 54' 25" N.

Like I said, its a long shot question. If it cannot be identified, that is okay, at least I tried.

Ok, I'll play. Unknown cluster for 100. What is the Wild Duck, M11?

Messier 11. Bright central star, then 2 bright stars outside the main concentration, and arcs of stars within the central concentration.

Ok, I just got to say, I LOVE that response! That made me smile!

I Just compared it to a picture of the Wild Duck cluster I took a while ago, and I think you are right.

Comparison:
Wild Duck Cluster
Wild Duck Cluster
Mystery Object
Mystery Object
(In an Alex Trebek voice,) Thats correct for 100 points.

Thanks for helping me ID it, I appreciate it.

nova.astrometry.net is probably one of the best tools available to APer's

I was thinking about trying astrometry.net but honestly thought the image would not solve. I'm glad to see it did.

Yeah, astrometry.net has pulled my bacon out of the fire a few times. It's especially useful to confirm that you were at least pointed in the right direction.

Ok, that website, astrometry.net is VERY useful! I just ran my picture of m8 (Lagoon Nebula) through it to try it out, and it WORKS!

Its AMAZING! Thanks for telling me about it!

Such a tiny image.
This is a more average pic for M11 (not one of the great ones):

I know it’s tiny, I was using a 21 mm eyepiece. I had to make do with the eyepiece I had.

Still, I got some good detail, so I’m OK with this image, even though it’s small.

When we talk about plate solving in astrophotography threads, that's the code that we are running. We use it to do polar alignment, goto alignment and find our targets. Perhaps few of us use the original astrometry code since ASTAP is faster (but we use the astrometry.net database, also for ASTAP). I have it on my Pi4b on a rig right by the focuser.
