I have also been known to keep the surface and just invert the proms for a spectacular look on the right image.

I think that's what you're talking about.
A little Dodge on the proms salvaged some of the finer details...

Thanks John,Lowjiber wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 12:57 pm That is an awesome prom, Cliff. Thanks for sharing the stack.
There is a little check-box at around the 1:45 mark in this video that might help align the stack.

Has some character not being perfect like old hand cranked film
I'll check out the video, I also changed the ROI from 800x600 to 1024x768 in the later ones probably didn't help was getting a bit tight .
I didn't realise Photoshop could do all that ! I aligned the frames manually best i could in

Re: SOLARHEADS - SEPTEMBER Chat Group
Yea that's what I was wanting to do Fraz . The Photoshop version that I am using is an early stripped down (cheap) version called "Elements" , the list for the Layer and masking tools is there but none of the tools are available so I have never used masks or layers . What I would try to do is use the section tool around the limb but it would want to cut faint proms off and not include them with the surface section .
This must seem strange but I have never been shy to spend on the hardware but for some reason I have skimped and fallen behind in the software area and not moved forward from the programs that I started with . My background being a machinist has always been mechanical so my interest was more in how the scopes worked . I learned how to use the old processing tools of the day and have never moved forward . I have become too comfortable in my old ways . My cameras are starting to act up now so I am quickly realizing that I am not going to be able to put off some serious camera , laptop and software upgrades much longer

I took advantage of downloading the data from your DropBox. That entire shot is really great all the way across.FRAZ wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 12:53 am ...

I left it monochrome to show the very fine details...
Not much was needed, just slight adjustments in Camera Raw...
Thanks for the fun!

Re: SOLARHEADS - SEPTEMBER Chat Group
It has likely been the learning curve that has put me off from upgrading my processing software , that and the subscription concept I would prefer to own the software rather than lease it . If I am not mistaken I believe your background is in software development . I obviously know nothing about this but if you were to develop a "solar specific" processing software I would be first in line to buy it !!FRAZ wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 12:06 pm Unfortunately Photoshop has gone to a subscription model but is something I will use regularly so have (grudgingly) paid for that, even though I have bought the product several times in the past 20 years or so across multiple computers.
I'm not sure how good GIMP is but it is a free alternative for anyone willing to try it and let us know.

I put a 1.2 Gaussian Blur on it and removed that JPEG artifact in the lower-left.

I didn't use the usual techniques though. i played around with the myriad of settings in an HDR program i have. Although it is not HDR it can do a good job of compressing tones.

Re: SOLARHEADS - SEPTEMBER Chat Group
I started in astro imaging with a Nikon SLR with Tri-X and often hypered film, made the jump to digital, still doing dark side imaging, the night sky. As my skies got worse and they built the mall 300 feet from me and my skies became
SOLAR IS THE ANSWER to both issues!
I still enjoy the objects you can get on the dark side, and I have found a way to do that without having to stay up late which is the slew telescope array remote imaging where you can control any one of 10 telescopes in the Canary Islands and chili from a 20-in plane wave to a 90 mm Takahashi. There's always a war as to whether that is really my imaging since somebody else owns a scope and does the maintenance however I decide on the target even celestial coordinates slew the scope to that and capture the images, some of the remote scopes you act more like a professional where you give them your target and a month later you get the results cuz they determine when to do it with slow it's real time you can actually slew the scope and actually see it capture the image while you're watching. However I still enjoy doing it myself and this is where the agonizing comes in. I am trying to lose
weight and creating a goal at the end and at one point I was thinking an 8 in rasa astrograph f2 and use it in my backyard for night time imaging, but I still get into that same issue of having to stay up late to do that. And what I really use it a lot plus the cold weather is starting to set in here now pretty soon it'll be five degrees Fahrenheit at night which is nippy when you're outside. Another thing I love solar so much because it's always changing day by day minute by minute hour by hour, so I'm actually wondering what piece of solar gear could I use as a goal. I really have all the gear I need however was just kind of wondering if a Daystar Gemini the dual chromosphere and photosphere would be a good goal and a good reward for losing some weight and keeping it off at one point I lost 120 lb and kept it off for 3 years and then thought I didn't have to die it anymore and I put
back 65 of it I've now lost 15 lb my goal is at least another 20 lb although my doctor would like me at 6 ft tall to be 175 last time I was 175 was I was in kindergarten. Having a c a k module and a Herschel wedge and the quark and the ls80 there's nothing I need, but need doesn't enter into goals.
Has anyone used the gemini?

I'm down in my back!!!
Off I go to my doctor. After poking around, I grimaced when she hit "the button". She made a preliminary diagnosis that I had bursitis, but sent me for an x-ray. It took about a week to get the x-ray and by then the pain had grown to the entire hip, and I was hobbling round using a cane. She set me up with an appointment to see a hip specialist... On Oct 11th.
As of yesterday, I had favored that right side so much that my back had become painful. So today, I'm relegated to hobbling abut with a walker.
