Brett's Carbon Star Hunt - September 2021

#1

Post by KingNothing13 »

Hey all, the year is progressing on - can you believe it is already September? Where does the time go?

On to this month's targets.

For those interested in Carbon Stars, more info can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_star as well as here:
https://skyandtelescope.org/observing/o ... bon-stars/

HD 198269 8.22
Since this is not a variable star (And I learned something that not all Carbon Stars are variable), there is no info in the AAVSO databases for this one.

This is taken from SkySafari:

HD 198269 is a 8th magnitude Star appearing in the constellation Delphinus. It is 1173 light years from our solar system. It is a orange-red star of spectral type C-H2 C2 2 CH4. Its energy output is 56 times the Sun's luminosity.

Z Psc 8.80 - 10.10

If it is daytime, do solar :)

Some nice choices. Hopefully I can get out to see more!

I'm still without a telescope so I had a go at the first and brightest on the list, 8th magnitude HD 198269.

I found Delphinus and sat taking those stars in for a while. Then with El Salib at 7 o'clock, HD 198269 should be centre of view. I was definitely looking in the right place with the pair of 6.5 mag stars just visible to the East and the three like an upside down Aries to the West. But there was nothing to be seen.

A good calibration exercise though. 6.8 magnitude HD197103 is about as dim as I could see with tonight's seeing and my binoculars.

Regards

Graeme

I'm going to try the list the next clear night Brett. Right now its foggy, with fully clear skies returning Monday. So I've got my fingers crossed that I will be able to see some again soon.
