Being An Astronomer

#1

Post by Baurice »

With shorter days and longer periods of darkness in the northern hemisphere, the peak of the Perseid meteor shower will soon be upon us, and it is now the start of the unofficial astronomy season in the northern hemisphere. I have been reliably informed by the retail trade that it is the time of year that they order new stock.

Many people thinking about “taking up” or “getting into” astronomy at this time of year but where do you start? Many people are put off starting because they consider it an expensive hobby or you need a degree in physics. Both are wrong! A few spare thousands and a physics degree do not do any harm but are far from necessary. A well-chosen pair of binoculars and a beginner book is all you need and we are talking less than £50 in British money.

You don’t need a Kindle to read the book, all you need is a PC, tablet or advanced telephone handset and you can download the Kindle app for free here:

In fact, the beginner book is only $3 in Kindle e-book format and equivalent price in other currencies, such as £2.16 in the UK.

Not only will this book teach you what you need to know to get started but will even show you that it is still possible to enjoy astronomy in the summer months.

You can buy it here:

There is no paperback edition for this edition, although one will be available at some time in the future.

If you have already bought a previous edition of “Being An Astronomer”, all content updates are included in my annual summaries, such as:
