Exactly. The timescale of the change was much too long for a supernova to be imminent. The outer layers of a giant star don't know that the core has run out of fuel and collapsed until it actually happens. The process of core collapse is on the order of seconds. The time scale for the envelope to respond is on the order of many days. Remember it takes about 30,000 years for a photon to random walk out of the Sun.
