Hi,

At Graeme's suggestion over on eileenslounge.com I offer you a belated attempt at processing this data.
2244

This particular image is my version 3 but despite that I don't think it's 'right'. You can see my first two versions here:
https://www.eileenslounge.com/viewtopic.php?p=283228

For my first attempt I converted the .fit files to TIFFs using the default settings in Fits Liberator. For the second and third versions I changed the stretch in Fits Liberator to 'ArcSinh'. Thereafter I used an ancient version of Photoshop (CS2) to get each image into a separate channel (because I've yet to figure out how to do that in Affinity Photo). The mapping was the 'Hubble palette', Sii-->red, Ha-->green and Oiii -->blue. I then opened the composite TIFF in Affinity Photo and started playing. One of the latest whizz bang features of Photo v1.9 is a dedicated 'Astro remove background filter'. That was handy.

Special thank you to Graeme for unlocking this thread to allow my late contribution.

This is so much fun! Thanks for coming up with this and thanks to whomever's data I'm destroying!
I've never used the "compose" feature in StarTools until just now... I didn't know how it even worked!
This data was so nice, it was a pleasure to process... It felt like I couldn't go wrong!

Interesting to see how Pixinsight handles this data! Looks good, lots of depth. Thanks Steve

I like what you did with this Steve. At a high level, what was your workflow? I'm new to PI and haven't tackled narrowband yet. I still can't get decent LRGB, still haven't mastered the basics of DBE and noise reduction. Really like the depth you got in this rendition.
Scopes: Esprit 100, 12.5" Telekit Dob

Thanks for the nice words.

WORK FLOW:
Align and crop the NB images
Reduce noise (I use MultiscaleLinearTransform)
Remove any gradients (ABE or DBE)
Stretch each NB image.
  • I try to approximately match the "brightness" and background level of all the NB images. Sometimes I use a blurred RangeSelection mask to select the target and mask the background so that the target can be stretched while the backgrouund (and noise) is not stretched.
Combine the images (Normally ChannelCombination for SHO and PixelMath for HOO)
SCNR (for SHO)
Noise reduction with TGVDenoise (use an inverted Luminance image as a mask to protect brighter regions)
Extract Luminance image
  • Sharpen and enhance contrast of Luminance image
Make a clone of SHO (or HOO) image
Increase color saturation of SHO (or HOO) clone
Open LRGBCombination
  • Choose the sharpened Luminance image for the L channel and make sure the check box is checked
  • Uncheck the R, G and B check boxes
  • Drag the blue diamond from LRGBCombination onto the clone
At this point I'm mostly done. I sometimes use the ColorMask Script to adjust colors sligtly.

Hope this isn't too confusing.

Cheers,

Steve
