Brett's Carbon Star Hunt - March 2021

#1

Post by KingNothing13 »

Hello all and welcome to another month of "Brett's Carbon Star Hunt".

I don't know about you, but I have been unable to observe at all this winter - some combination of clouds, extreme cold, large amounts of snow have made it impossible to take out the telescope - capped by the fact that I cannot get my shed door open all of the way right now, which means I cannot get my telescope out, even if I wanted to!

That's a long winded way of saying, "I have yet to observe ANY of the stars that I've been highlighting". Such is life, I guess - but it does make me think I need a better "Grab-and-Go" that I can store in the house and take out when the shed door is un-cooperative.

Anyway, enough chit-chat, on to this month's targets:

Y Cvn - Aka. La Superba - If I see a star that has more than a stellar designation to it, I have to have it on the list, so here is this one. Seems to range in mag from 4.86 - 7.32. AAVSO Data can be found here and observations in their database can be found here.

V Crb - This one could be a little more difficult - ranges from 6.9 - 12.6. Data is found here and observations here.

RU Pup - The last target this month, it may be a little more difficult for the northern latitudes - it ranges from 10.3 - 12.2, so it is also a little dimmer than most of my targets. Data and the lone observation from the last year in their database here

Hi Brett. A short but sweet report for a start into March. The weather here has warmed up lately, but we have so much humidity now, everything is wet and not much chance to get out. You might want to consider a small portable scope like this to carry outside:

Thanks for your latest Carbon Star report Brett, and the best of wishes for better weather.

I hope this is okay...

I'm not able to stand at a telescope for long periods and the chairs just don't work for me anymore. So I decided to attempt to capture images of this months Carbon Star Challenge.

I was only able to capture 2 of them as the one I missed came up after my 'bedtime'.

So here goes.

V CVn captured using Sharpcap in LiveStack mode. 10 images at 30 seconds each. ES80ed-cf scope, EQ6g mount, ASI533mc-pro camera. Processed in StarTools and PS.

RU-Pup captured using Sharpcap in LiveStack mode. 10 images at 30 seconds each. ES80ed-cf scope, EQ6g mount, ASI533mc-pro camera. Processed in StarTools and PS. I cropped the capture region on this star as it was a bit smaller.

Of course it is okay! Thanks for sharing the images! I Can finally get my shed door open, but the backyard is basically sheer ice at this point, so I can't really get out at all!

It's a bit too windy tonight for imaging but I did have a go at the March Carbon Stars.

Y Cvn - Aka. La Superba really is superb! I captured 10 x 120 second images but the wind gusts are causing focusing problems.

V Crb is behind my house , it should rise later. Ru Pup is a bit too low to rise above the neigbour's fence.

I'll see what I can salvage from the Y Cvn data and post it up soon.

Cheers Brett.

Regards

Graeme

Only 4 of the 10 were useable due to wind but enough to show off La Superba!

Friday evening I observed La Superba.
Never seen it.
When my telescope stopped slewing and I looked, I could barely suppress a sigh.
This surely is a RED star!
