NGC 6822, Barnard's Galaxy

Not well known, this nondescript irregular galaxy is the closest to our Milky Way other than the recognized satellite galaxies. It is at 1.6 million light years, only 2/3 the distance of M31. It was the first galaxy to have its distance measured.

Very nice indeed Kathy. A beautiful image of a beautiful and intriguing galaxy. It can be a tough observation target when one has significant LP, and certainly is best left to darker skies as far as visual detection goes. I annotated your image with the five bright HII regions, which you captured, using their Hubble designations - I, II, III, V and X. Great job. :)

LOL! :lol: No, but this was the target I was aiming for when I imaged that field. I plate-solved the KDF image. It is about one field of view off to the right.
