NGC 5389 Region and NGC 5430

This is a simple field of a number of galaxies. The field is pretty wide relative to the objects, so you have to look at the full size or annotated images to see some of the galaxies (Links below). The image has NGC 5376, NGC 5379, NGC 5389, NGC 5402, and NGC 5430.

NGC 5379 and 5389 form a pair with NGC 5389 being the larger of the two. NGC 5430 is also listed as a galaxy group in NED and Simbad, but I don't see it at this image scale. There are Background QSO's in this field, I annotated the brightest one.There is also a galaxy cluster barely visible with a reasonably high redshift.

I always check out your annotated beforehand. The image is more enjoyable that way. You seem to pick fields of view with lots of "action".

Thanks. To create the annotation image, I use PixInsight and Photoshop. To get the information content, I use the databases Simbad and NED (NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database) overlayed on my image with Aladin. I typically identify my imaging targets and composition by selecting a dominant target or a field with multiple targets of interest. After I capture and process the image, I like to review/research the field for interesting objects - that's where the databases come in. PixInsight can give some basic information and automate the overlays, but fall pretty short on the information content. Its almost always a surprise about the objects in a given field and I really enjoy the process of discovery. So its not a one button exercise, but it is a lot of fun.

You know, That's a really good idea. By the time I finish an annotation, I am really familiar with the image field so everything is pretty clear to me where it is. Admittedly, By just looking at the image without annotation first, I think I'd miss a lot. (I guess I do miss a lot until I do the annotation ;) )

Thanks for the comment on the image.

No I have not used astrometry.net for annotation. I have used it a long time ago - but only for plate solves. Does Astrometry.net have access to the Simbad and NED databases? I just uploaded an image for a plate solve. What do I do next for an annotation? I don't see instructions. Do I need to log in?

Yes, sign in. After you upload an image it will automatically solve. When the solve page says success (it can also say failure) click on the Go to results page (shown by the red box) and you will see what the image 2nd image is showing. The default is the annotation page. To get other pages, move your mouse to the top of the image and a drop-down will appear (as shown in the attached picture with the red border). You can explore each one of these corollary images from the one solved. I don't know which databases it uses but I've always been satisfied with their annotations.
