Another SE mount question: set goto?

#1

Post by gregl »

Say, if there are any SE experts out there I could use a clarification on setting the goto approach and alignment stars. I’ve got sources that advise conflicting information.

My scope is front heavy. One source says set the alt goto approach to positive, the other says set it negative. And one source says use the down and right buttons to center an alignment star, while another source says use the up and right, and yet a third source says use right and down when pre-meridian and right and up when post-meridian.

So there are two questions:
1. Setting goto for a front-heavy scope: positive or negative?

2. Centering alignment stars:
a. down and right;
b. up and right;
c. down and right pre-meridian, up and right post-meridian.

THANKS!

Well, I can't delete the post but I decided to read the manual (duh) rather than rely on internet sources and it says alt goto should be positive. I suspect they have the right answer. :doh:

And the answer to question two seems to be to use the same movements that the mount uses when it slews to a selected object.

So, as it is said among computer support folks, RTFM! :roll:

Your second post is correct. That darn manual, how dare it almost always have the correct answer!

Thanks, Ylem. I've been there and it's a great site. Haven't seen the book yet.

You should be able to order it from the site, if not the big A.

+1 on Mike's book. Finishing up and left if handy for getting rid of the backlash.

Actually taking the time to set the backlash works wonders as well :)
