M40 the Lamest Messier

#1

Post by sdbodin »

M40 is just a pair of 9th mag stars in Uma, guess Mr. M had a bug on his eyelens that night, no fuzz at all, faint or otherwise.

Got this one a week back and wanted to put in my Messier Gallery, but apparently there is an upload problem. Anyway, just a dozen to go. The rest are mostly far south summer objects that might be a problem for my latitude as some are going to be within 10 deg of the horizon.

Captured with Meade 16 LX200 at f6.2, thru Atik 460ex mono, 5/5second RGB exposures only, all binned 2x2. No guiding, flats, darks, bias, sweat.

Clear skies,
Steve

It's not exactly a pinwheel galaxy!

Good luck with the last 12.

Regards

Yea...when I observed M40 the first time I thought...What the heck !? 😊
It looks like you caught some color. That adds some interesting detail.

I don't think I observed any color when observing this pair with my frac.
Pretty nice, Steve.

To be fair with monsieur Messier, according to Celestron's StarSense app, M40 was first erroneously described by astronomer Johannes Hevelius as a nebula surrounding two stars. Messier didn't see the nebula but still entered in his catalogue.

Good to know I'm not the only one unsure of what I see.

Nice image, Steve. This object is one of the reasons I will probably never complete the M110 photography challenge. I just can't bring myself to spend any time on it. Oh well, less bling for me :)

Thanks Bob,

But, I didn't spend any time on it, 5 second exposures, I'm sure you can do that and get that bling.
