Possible to submit moderate widefield views for AP Messiers?

I mean, I'm not going to use my 10mm-derived skyscapes  ...but I could use the practice with my 135mm prime lens, and have an bargain basement Sigma 300 mm zoom that I might put to work.

For example, the attached image has ~ 4 Messiers (M25, M28, M22, and M24) - a real basket load - in the field of view... would TSS mods be OK with this level of Tomfoolery? :).

Thanks - I'll see myself out.

Ian

Just do a couple of night sky panoramas and you are done Ian. :D

Thank you for asking this question, but I'm going to vote no, it basically defeats the purpose of this forum. which is to concentrate / give sole attention to each Messier object. Capturing a large area of the sky to gather several Messiers at once does not do justice to each individual object.

Cheers,
JT

The same question was in my head only round the other way! Until the time comes when I have invented a way to use my Celestron powered focuser whilst looking through an eyepiece, would it be possible to submit narrow views for AP for the Messier award of for instance M31, M42 and M45 where only the central region is captured?

Hi Graeme,

Instead of using your GPCAM2, would you be using your Canon T3i? The T3i at prime focus will capture about 1/3 of M31. If you have the .63 FR from Celestron then that setup will capture about 60% of M31. Either of these hypothetical images would work for "M" photo award. You would be using your gear to the best of its ability to capture that particular object.

Cheers,
JT

Thanks JT

I had using the Canon in mind. But I will look at procuring a focal reducer to go with it. Although I heard a rumour that Santa has an 80mm guide scope in his sack with my name on it. So I could look at using that.

Graeme

An 80mm scope with your T3i is the perfect combo to image ALL of the Messiers! With the 80mm on top of your C9.25 you could use the C9.25 as your guide scope. I've done this before with my 80mm on top of my C11.

I hope Santa comes through for you.

Using the 80mm as a wide field scope was the part of the decision making process that swung it for the scope over a OAG.

I have found that some Messier objects look just as good widefield as they do in close-up. I don't enter mine in competitions, as I don't have a driven mount and take most of them with my DSLR only.
