What is thaat 11 mag thing in m66?

#1

Post by milanpicard »

Hey guys, the Rochesterastronomy site supernova page has an 11 mag thing of unknown origin listed in m66. Does anyone know what it is, any details, finders, anything?

Well ok, but where is the supernova? There is no designation on the pic, the two big stars are just stars, I confirmed that in Skysafari... today I have a rare free window.. should I just watch M66, and the 11 mag star that is not in Skysafari is the sn? :)

Does anyone have any other info on the subject pls?

Says 4.5 SE of center. Not marked. My guess it's one of the 3 stars in the lower right.

4.5"? Is that so close to the center that only 10mm or higher can separate it? Is it inside the grey of the galaxy in an 8dob view, do you think? Or should I look for it outside the greying?

I marked the approximate location of AT2020cwh on one of my images of M66. It should be pretty easy to pick it up at 4.5 arc-minutes from the galaxy's core.

That would work.

Well, I just came back from outside... it was not a good sky, m66 was almost invisible in the 8dob25mm, hardly better in higher mag... but I did see the stars that pointed to it quite clearly, those four, from 9 to 11.6 mag, even the faintest one was clearly visible. I also pinpointed the location where the sn should be, thanks to your kind charts, guys, thank you. But there was nothing there at all, at least up to 12 mag, cuz I would have seen it.

You know I love the rochesterastronomy site cuz they gave me my first really visible sn, and two other half imaginary ones that I have no trouble believing, but I would have a few words to say to the magnitude update guy about sending innocent people out to freeze under empty, laughing skies...

Does anyone have any credible magnitude estimates on that thing maybe? Now for some hot tea,,,.

This page linked from the rochester site, seems to say it might have been a solar system object.

The link also marks another star outside M66 which does not show up in the before and after images.
