Wow! I thought having a kitty pump the pillow before sleeping on it was disruptive. Having a meteorite land on it would be just a bit startling!

I now its not the same but .... I had a 7cm long brown frog plop onto my face while I was sleeping years ago. I had been hunting it for a while, it wasn't a real priority till it done that..... It was spotted a few times in the toilet bowl..... Flushed it away many times, but it kept coming back. Thinking back , it must have been an astronomer as well ! Always sneaking back for a view of the full moon.

Great Story. What crosses my mind is that she missed being killed by just a few inches. I am sure she will get offers for the meteorite, I just hope she does not sell to the first one.

Hi Larry. Wow, this is a fascinating story. Here is another great story of an Alabama women actually being hit by a meteorite when it crashed into her home back in 1954.

Thanks for finding and putting up this interesting link Larry and the best of regards.

The Earth is shielded by the Moon, the atmosphere, CORDS, National exploration/defense organisations. But it is a question, where a meteorite reaches the earth, it is a question, where it does. In deserted place or overcrowded city or not overcrowded town.
They say, statistically, 6% of people can be hit by a meteorite yearly.

Interesting. Do they break that down by size? Big difference between being clonked by a baseball versus a grain of salt.

Good question.
I tried to put this information to the previous post.
But there are several points to be considered:
- if it is a one person, than the size should be small enough not to hit building blocks;
- the meteorites explode, and it depends to their speed and compound.

It should be something not big and explosive near earth.

There are probably more meteor strikes to Earth than we realise, in varying degrees of size, the smaller ones obviously not as easily detected. Especially when they land in remote areas.

Quite scary when you think that the larger ones that get through can have such devastating results.

Thank you @Chich Larry for posting that article.

IIRC the size distribution follows a power law.
May have to do some digging to find it again.

Apparently meteorites are fairly cool when they land. There have been reports of some even having frost on them. Granted the list of ones seen and/or handled right after landing is small but as I understand it they are very cold to start with and most of the heat is generated high in the atmosphere so they slow and can cool back down by the time they land. Plus there is ablation of the hot outer layers so it gets stripped away.
If anyone knows for sure, please weigh in.

I have never seen a meteorites strike but for a few videos it looks like its flaming before hitting ? that is quite a large rock , probably worth a few thousand certainly more that the broken roof Sheet and timber

Rocks as small as the one in this incident slow to terminal velocity in the troposphere. That gives them time to lose heat to air stream as they fall.

well then I dont think mine, if a small one fall on my garden but the chance is probably 0 as my land is only 1000m2 , but we are co owners of a 200 hectares farm so perhaps a chance there but finding it ?

Investigators are looking for more bits. https://www.imo.net/did-you-see-or-reco ... -on-oct-3/

Edit : Seems that being able to associate a specific meteorite with an observed meteor is actually rather rare.
