Somewhere there should be video?

And yeah, I think China has a bigger one out there. So one can argue that maybe there is something better, but that doesn't mean that Arecibo was not still very useful.

This article on NPR.org shows a decent image of the aftermath of the collapse:

I think the chinese one dosn't do radar, only does radio

The Arecibo was accurate in measuring distance of objects and trajectory with emiting radio waves, bouncing it of the target and collecting signal, unlike the big chinese one that can only collect radio waves.

I know that the facility was very old and decrepit and it was scheduled for some sort of demolition or disassembly, but watching that video just breaks my heart!

Thanks very much for sharing this.

From that drone footage it looks like the rightmost 2 cables out 5 had already snapped earlier, maybe that is why they were monitoring it with a drone frequently, and they just happened to catch the moment.

One cable had snapped back in August or thereabouts, and one or two more let go a week or two ago. They have obviously been monitoring the tower from a drone since then, because they said that the remaining cables were losing about one wire a day. That is why they had deemed it too dangerous to even assess, let alone repair. At the beginning of the drone footage, you can see those broken wires sticking out like bristles on a brush.
