StarTools 7: full GPU acceleration, new modules, new features, new UI

#1

Post by startoolsastro »

Hi all,

Though many TSS'ers here are avid StarTools alpha/beta testers, I just wanted to let you know of the final release version of StarTools 7, coinciding with ST's 10th anniversary! :occasion-birthday:

The list of innovations, new functionality, improvements, optimizations and enhancements is, again, very, very long (see CHANGELOG file).

The catalyst for many of these has been the full GPU acceleration of the signal processing engine. The extra grunt this has provided, has not just made things faster (a lot faster!), but also allowed for rolling out new brute force techniques that were either optional or too costly before.

For a quick <4m highlight reel of what's new, please see this video;

As usual, you can find 1.7 final release version in the download section of the website.

I cannot thank enough our users, the many generous alpha/beta testers, translators, dataset providers, and signal processing enthusiast who continue to actively contribute to StarTools development and innovation over these past 10 years.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! :text-thankyouyellow:

Without you, StarTools would not be where it is now; at the cutting-edge of astronomical image signal processing and fidelity! You can read more about the state-of-the-art signal processing engine that powers ST here if you're curious as to what truly drives this beast of an engine. Its inception opened up a realm of new possibilities for AP post-processing, and 10 years on it is still yielding signal fidelity improvements that simply cannot and will not exist in any other conventional processing software.

Wishing you all clear skies, happy holidays, and a happy and healthy 2021!

I gave the latest version a run through yesterday, with great results.

Now I will admit this is really the first time I've put StarTools to the test with my new desktop computer. It's light years faster than my old one but still. Everything ran much fast and the end results were great!!!

Thanks Ivo for your continued progress on making StarTools a valuable tool for AP'rs.

Finished a reprocess of the Iris Nebula V7 with new NVIDIA card. GPU acceleration was really noticeable. Also liking the overall improvements to the modules. Structure in particular seems to give a lot more control of stars. Great job on v 1.7!

Here's my Iris image I took on a camping trip in central Nevada. There was a fair bit of noise caused by smoke from nearby wildfires but the structure module helped tame it.
