Post by KingClinton »

If you have any target suggestions for the May 2020 challenge we would love to hear them!

You can put forward a suggestion for the Northern hemisphere or the Southern hemisphere or both if you like!
Also remember our 9th magnitude limit.

Let us know what tickles your fancy for May 2020 and post your suggestions to this topic. :text-thankyoublue:
Eyeballs, binoculars, sketch box, Scopes n stuff.
Some people don't understand why I love astronomy so much, I cannot understand why they do not!

My suggestions for May.

North: M101 - a bright but difficult to see galaxy, a real challenge.

South: NGC 5139 - never pass up a chance to view this immense glob!

Cheers,
JT

Can I propose a popular target for May, one I captured badly early doors back when I was unguided!

The famous Whirlpool Galaxy Messier 51

Magnitude: 8.4 Constellation: Canes Venatici

Regards

Graeme

My suggestions for May 2020:

North: M51 - which passes the test for mag = 9 (or brighter).

South: NGC 5139 (seems to be a popular one this time around... and BTW, it's naked-eye visible !!!)

Here at 53 degrees N I (and most people in the UK I guess) am rapidly running out of astronomical dark so targets will need to be high and bright. So, I agree with suggestions on M51. (Its already next on my list anyway  )
Scope: Skywatcher Evostar 80ED (SW 0.85 FR/FF) on a SW NEQ6Pro
Guiding; SW Evoguide 50ED, ASI 120mm mini
Meade 8" LX200 GPS on wedge (Guided with a cheapo 50mm guidescope and a ZWO ASI 120mm mini)
Sharpstar 61EDPH II (with dedicated 0.8 reducer) with wiliam Optics 32mm uniguide
Camera: ASI2600MC pro. QHY 163M with ZWO 7nm NB filters, Canon EOS700D astro mod
Secondary mount: Skywatcher StarAdventurer
