Target suggestions for December 2019

#1

Post by bladekeeper »

If you have any ideas for the December 2019 challenge we would love to hear them!

Please posts your suggestions to this thread, we will put them in the hat for the draw at the end of November/beginning of December!

Remember to be sure they are visible from both hemispheres and easily found with smaller scopes under moderately light-polluted skies.

Looking forward to your suggestions!!! :text-thankyoublue:

How about Messier 78, also known as NGC 2068, also known as Casper the Friendly Ghost Nebula.

A bit small but it's just about bright enough for 60 second captures like mine! It sits on or about the celestial equator in Orion. And I haven't ticked it off my Messier list yet!

Regards

Graeme

Most suggestions in the past have been various DSOs. How about something different -- Uranus. Uranus is just past opposition, so it should be well positioned all month for anyone to find. It can offer a variety of challenges, depending on what you have. Some will have the challenge of finding it and positively identifying it. Some will see how much blue-green color they can get out of the ice giant. Maybe see if you can discern a disc instead of a dot. Taking observations over several days should allow one to pick out the planets movement against the background stars. For those with larger apertures, try to pick out a moon or two (I read something a couple of weeks ago, I believe it was sky and telescope, claiming an 8 inch scope had picked out moons before).
telescopes: XT6 and XT12 Dobsonians
binoculars: 15x70
