If you have any ideas for the November 2019 challenge we would love to hear them!

Please posts your suggestions to this thread, we will put them in the hat for the draw at the end of October!

Remember to be sure they are visible from both hemispheres and easily found with smaller scopes under moderately light polluted skies.

Looking forward to your suggestions!!! :text-thankyoublue:

A challenging object yet bright enough to be seen,

M1.

Cheers,

M74 is a good challenge object because of its face-on orientation and resulting lower surface brightness. Back in 2013 from our dark site I observed the supernova SN 2013ej in M74 with the 10 inch, as well as some subtle spiral structure.

You might also consider Messier 33 in Triangulum. While it has a bright magnitude, it really challenge people with its low surface brightness. Of course one could also pick the bright HII region within M33, NGC 604. Another challenging object is the bright star cloud NGC 206 within Messier 31.

All are well placed in November.

M74 would be a good target - a bit harder to locate than M1 or M33, though either of those would be fine as well.

Hi Clinton and all. Another vote for M33 (or NGC 598) in Triangulum, as it is always a popular target.

If I decide to go out to a darksite this Thursday, I will give it a try.

For me, M1 or M33 would work; I could probably see both with my 10" even on a not-so-perfect night. M74 at mag 10 would be quite a challenge from here; I'd need a really clear night and a well-timed power failure would definitely help too

But having said that, it is a November challenge... ;)

I was thinking crab nebula which is bright enough to manage in lp or ic 2087 which might be a bit harder with lp, i think you would need a 200-400mm fl to frame it all though

Thanks for making that thread for December Bryan. It was on my to-do list for today. I'm ever so happy you took care of it.
