If you have any target suggestions for the August 2020 challenge we would love to hear them!

You can put forward a suggestion for the Northern hemisphere or the Southern hemisphere or both if you like!
Also remember our 9th magnitude limit.

Let us know what tickles your fancy for August 2020 and post your suggestions to this topic.
We look forward to hearing them!

For the north, I can recommend:

Messier 71 (NGC 6838) - a class 10/11 globular in Sagitta at mag 8.1 with a diameter of about 7.2' (observed countless times with apertures ranging from 10x50 binoculars to 17.5 inches); this is a nice challenge because of its weaker stellar density and thus lower surface brightness within a very rich MW field

or

NGC 7243 - an open cluster in Lacerta at mag 6.4 with a diameter of about 30' (observed numerous times with instruments ranging from binoculars to 10/12 inch; lies in a rich MW field

For the south, I can recommend:

NGC 6584 - a class 8 globular cluster in Telescopium at mag 7.9, diameter about 6.6' (I have observed it a couple of times with my ED80 during trips nearer the equator); a diffuse, slightly challenging cluster in this small southern constellation

or

NGC 6752 - a class 6 globular in Pavo at mag 5.3, diameter of about 20.4' (observed a couple of times with the ED80 during those trips as well); a true beauty in an engaging constellation

I believe the above objects provide a mix of easy and modestly challenging objects for beginners. Good luck whatever the challenges turn out to be. :)

I would like to say Saturn as it's in a good position but it's not ideal for my new camera!

So can I suggest for the August Challenge, C19, the Cocoon Nebula. An open cluster with nebulosity that fits nicely into my field of view.

Regards

Graeme
