Had somewhat clear skies and porr seeing tonight, but thought I could try my hand at Thor's Helmet from home. This is a new one for me. Started at Sirius and star hopped through Caroline's cluster and on up to the area where Thor's Helmet should be. Letting the scope settle and my eyes adjust, and I can see several key stars in the field that tell me I am in the right place. As I let the eyes adjust and shift from direct to inverted vision, I think I can talk myself into seeing some faint cloudiness in the brightest area of the nebula. Not much else to report. I would love to try again from a dark site -- if weather and such will cooperate on a weekend.

Sounds about right on the description to me. Hopefully you can get a dark site opportunity this weekend.
The weather around here is quite cooperative. With whom and for what purpose I know not. Certainly not me.

Which of your scopes were you using? I'm assuming it was your XT12?

JayTee, that is correct. As faint as it was in the 12 inch, I have my doubts that I would have been able to see it in the 6 inch under those conditions.

This target benefits greatly from OIII or UHC filter.
I have resolved the helmet shape quite nicely from my Bortle 7 home location using 5" refractor, Lumicon OIII filter and BCO 18mm EP (2.4mm exit pupil, 53x).
