MrShorty Dec 2019 M78 report

#1

Post by MrShorty »

Thursday night was clear, so I pulled the XT12 out in hopes of making a go at M78. Unfortunately, I had not cleared a path through the snow on the grass from Christmas's small snow storm, so I was confined to the patio which does not have much horizon. But Orion was above the house and had not gone behind the chimney, yet, so I had a few minutes to see if I could see M78.

Beginning at Orion's belt, I starhopped up Orion's side until I saw two small dots with a hint of haze near and around them. Confirming with the chart, and that is M78.

While out, I figured I would wander around Orion and Auriga some. M42 was pretty impressive, as seeing was decent. Mintaka was nice double star (Rigel was already behind the chimney, so I couldn't try my eye at Rigel). Then wander through M36, M37, M38, and M35 for some nice open clusters.

Yeah, I have to remind myself (I'm on the equator) that there's this stuff called snow.... Glad you found a way to get around the problem.
