NGC 6744 is an intermediate spiral galaxy about 30 million light-years away in the constellation Pavo. It is considered as a Milky Way mimic in our immediate vicinity, displaying flocculent arms and an elongated core.

Equipment as per my signature....yes the new ASI2600MM is here and working perfectly.

L,R,G,B 30 X 5 minutes each.
Darks 30 x 5 minutes
Flats and Dark Flats 10 per filter.
All at gain = 100, offset = 40 @ 0°C

My first LRGB image.

Quite a challenge as quite low and faint. Difficult to process.

Nice image Gerald....some more detail

Distance to Earth: 30.98 million light years
Magnitude: 9.14
Absolute magnitude: -21.78
Constellation: Pavo
Apparent size (V): 20′.0 × 12′.9
Distance: 31 ± 5.2 Mly; (9.5 ± 1.6 Mpc)
Apparent magnitude (V): 9.14

Given it's large size, this is one definitely not to miss in the Southern Hemisphere! I would love to see it one day.

Hi Gerald. A superb NGC 6744 galaxy image in LRGB from the southern hemisphere. Nice spiral arm details on this face on galaxy and the elongated core shows up well too. Thanks for sharing this capture with us Gerald, and congratulations on receiving the TSS APOD Award today.

Congrats on the APOD award for the 20th Gerald. Taking another look at your image, I see you also captured the galaxy ESO 104 38 (aka PGC 62815) to the lower right of NGC 6744. It is sometimes improperly listed as NGC 6744A. This barred irregular is listed at magnitude 14.4, with an angular size of 1.8'x0.7', resulting in a a surface brightness of 14.5. Again, well done and thank you for the contribution to the monthly challenge.

Evening all. Been a bit hectic here South Africa and hence not had time to be online here. I have re-processed a bit to ease off some of the noise and stretch a bit more colour.
Have lost a bit of nebulosity though. Real balancing act.
