January DSO Challenge from Kent UK

#1

Post by Graeme1858 »

Saturday night was clear here in SE UK. So I set up to capture the targets of the January DSO Challenge. I started early, because you can in the winter!

My house is to the East of my telescope position but Gemini had risen above it by 6:30 so I framed up open cluster M35 and grabbed some subs.

Moving slightly West to the dimmer but denser cluster NGC2158, humidity was high and I had to use the hair drier before capturing it. Looks like I could have moved the black point a bit tighter.

The Orion targets were still low, so I nipped off to Andromeda for an hour then came back to capture the lovely little Planetary Nebula that is NGC2022. I was pleased to see some nebula colour.

M78 is really quite a dim target so once I was plate solved I could see the two staring eyes and could just make out the surrounding dust. I'm quite pleased with the finished result but the data is clearly lacking for such a target so it looks over processed. But it's still better than my last attempt!

A fine set of targets Alan. I didn't go for M42 because I didn't have time to do it justice because I had to get up early for a Sunday shift. I particularly liked NGC2022, I might have to give it another go with a 2x barlow in place.

Thanks for the Challenge.

Regards

Graeme

Very, very nicely done Graeme. For me, your image of M35 validates what I've found to be the case for the most part; namely that M35 is a better visual target than a photographic one. Your image of NGC 2158 really displays its character well. Smaller and dimmer, but still a very nice cluster.

I really enjoyed your image of NGC 2022. Most times you see images showing only a white disk, so obtaining the bluish tint is nice. Visually it only ever appears as white of course.

Your image of the M78 field of course revealed much more of the subtle nebulous extensions of this complex than my visual inspection. So all in all you did a bang up job and glad you enjoyed the pursuit.

Liked your images.

Your M78 image is excellent. I've tried this one many times. I'm still working on it myself for this month's challenge.
