M110 October Challenge from Kent UK

#1

Post by Graeme1858 »

So, APT has been making me nervous lately struggling as it does to control the cooler on the back of my ASI294. As a result I've been YouTubing and playing with NINA. NINA does a great job of cooling the camera and making mosaics easy so I thought a 4 panel image of M110 showing a chunk of M32 in the corner to give perspective would be well arty.

It didn't quite work out! So here's just M110 on it's own captured using APT with NINA controlling the cooler.

5 x 180 second subs at -10°C
5 darks, 20 flats, 20 flat darks
Deep sky stacker, Gimp.

Well done Graeme. I noted that you picked up the dark lanes on either side of the core. I marked their location in the below copy of your image. :)

Thanks Alan

The new ASI294 seems to be doing the job ok!

I also spotted the gradient at the edge of the image and wasn't sure if it was light pollution or the edge of Andromeda as per my initial intention. I tried to orientate my image to compare to a Stellarium screen dump. With no diagonal I'm inverted on both axes and at the meridian as we were M110 was above M31 to the West. I should probably take more notes whilst imaging!

Regards

Graeme

I do note faint extensions of M110's galactic disk generally along the major axis, but not quite in line with it. Particularly in the direction of the lower left corner If any outlying structure of M31 were to be picked up, I would look for it in toward the upper right corner of your image in the direction of M31. However, I will say I am picking up some general haziness, albeit quite subtle, across the majority of the frame. This may be due to LP, general transparency issues or some other reason. But since I do not image, I cannot state what it is or how it can be addressed with certainty - but I do detect it.
