Last week, I sent this to my astro club and local mailing list, got 86 responses so far.

10 of 20 - but I beg to argue that the word I used for the dark matter particle was not the adverb but the adjective. Therefor I claim 13 of 20.

Lyra, 14/16 correct. At outreach events, it’s fun to have people compare Vega with Arcturus, and discuss stellar temperature. “Wow, I didn’t know stars have different colors!”

2. In the quiz header picture above, which Messier object appears on the left? (1)
M81, 13/16 correct. Somebody said they couldn't see the picture, not sure why..

3. Name the astronomer credited with discovering both galaxies in the quiz header (last name only). (1)
Bode, 10/16 correct. Herschel was a popular wrong answer..

4. The eyepiece of a Galilean telescope is a simple concave lens, which provides an upright image. (1)
True, 7/16 correct. Rather surprised most people miss this one… did it seem like a trick question?

5. This month (July 2020), Saturn has joined Jupiter within the borders of which constellation? (1)
Sagittarius, 9/16 correct. Both coming to opposition this month, a nice pair indeed!

6. Which was the only NASA Space Shuttle never to fly in outer space? (1)
Enterprise, 13/16 correct. Enterprise was only used for atmospheric test flights, released from the top of a 747.

7. The name of this Japanese telescope company is also, in English, the word for a mature female fox. (2)
Vixen, 13/16 correct. Takahashi was named by the other three.

8. Of the twelve Zodiac constellations, which has the largest sky area? (2 each)
Virgo, 6/16 correct.

9. A spherical moon is 200 km in diameter. What is the approximate circumference of the moon's equator? (2)
628 km, 10/16 correct. Just multiply 200 by Pi (3.14).. yeah, more of a math question.

10. Which term is an acronym for hypothetical particles that are proposed candidates for dark matter? (2)
WIMPs, 13/16 correct. But you never know, some new hypotheses may come up with GEEKs or DOLTs as candidate particles.

11. In the above acronym, which exact word does the first letter stand for? (3)
Weakly, 4/16 correct. No not Weak... remember, I said "exact word". Hey, that's why it's a 3 pointer!

12. You are standing on the planet Mars, looking overhead at the moon Phobos. About how wide does it appear compared to our Moon from Earth? (3)
One third, 1/16 correct. Only the Champ got this one right (did she guess? hmmm?) The favored wrong answer was one fifth. The word “overhead” was important to the question: when near the horizon Phobos is significantly farther away, thus appears much smaller.

13. How did you find this quiz?
About right, 10/16, the others said too hard. Okay, maybe I'll lighten up next month..
