Hey Sky Searchers, I am a student designing an astronomy weather application and I need your help

Hey Astronomers,

I have a favor to ask of you all. I am a Computer Science student currently doing lectures on Interaction Design. For this course we have to design a weather application for and with a specific group of people in mind. Since I have some friends doing hobby astronomy, I was quickly inspired. Mind though that the application is not only focused on astronomers that use telescopes, but also for those that just enjoy the nightsky / make nightscape photography.

A big part of the assignment is data gathering. The entire questionnaire takes about 5-8 minutes to complete - Honestly it looks longer than it is since there there are a lot of multiple choice questions! I know that you are all busy and it is a lot to ask, but you would be doing me a great favor.

Here is the form: https://forms.gle/n4LeTALWQcyw3EXZ7

Thank you all for your help and for taking your time. I hope that my questions all make sense and that the content is factually correct. (Yes, please correct me if I am wrong ;) )

PS: A quick heads up - For now this is just a conceptual design. I might decide to actually program something this summer if enough people are interested and if I find good data sources.

Good survey. The only things I might add would be, who do you star gaze with? And specialist interests, solar, planetary, deep sky viewing, astrophotography etc.

Welcome to the forum.

Regards

Graeme

Welcome to TSS, and that was fun, and quick too :D The only thing I have about it is the first question, "How often do you go stargazing?" The answers given were good, but it's hard to judge that, as weather has an effect. Sometimes I'm out once a month due to constant cloud cover (think 2019 lol), and there's been a few where I'm out almost every night.
I guess the answer I was looking for was "When it's not cloudy/raining" But again, that's just me.

Overall well done, and hope my input helps :D

A few questions, is astro imaging remotely inside my room while I sleep count as star gazing ?

The question where it says how often do you stargaze "
I want to click everyday but it's always cloudy atleast once a week :(

Tools of choice was really limited, no fully automated telescope and software? , or even just a telescope mount

The weather effecting astronomy could use dew. for planetary observers jet stream, smoke haze, the most common one that usually happens when someone buys something.. Clouds..

Astronomical seing is actually a scale from 1-10 and it's called the pickering scale. I would consider atleast 6 a Suitable night.

I'll complete the questionare to the best of my abilities

I just took the questionnaire I hope it helps.

2 things:
1) There are two distinct branches of amateur astronomy, the first is visual observing the second is astrophotography. Visual astronomy can accommodate a lot worse conditions than can astrophotography.
2) Don't forget to include Hawaii in your forecast model. We are not included in several astronomy meteorological websites.

Good luck,

I completed it.
It's well written. It points out to me how everyone is so different in how they approach this hobby. Please get back to us when you have some summary results. Perhaps there are some surprises in the collected data.
