Autostakkert

#1

Post by Graeme1858 »

Any Autostakkert experts here?

I recorded some lucky image ser files last night of Jupiter using Sharpcap. Then today attempted a stack using Autostakkert. All looked good until the laptop gave up and reported a lack of memory error!

My laptop is a 2GhZ i7 with 16Gb of ram. Am I missing something obvious or do I need a new laptop?

Regards

Graeme

Hi Graeme, I had the same thing the other night on the same planet  I Reduced the image size in PIPP,to about 600 X 600. Yours is pretty big at 1920 X 1080. It worked for me; hope it does for you.

All the best,
Mark

Hi Graeme,

I also reduce the image size in PIPP prior to loading it into Autostakkert. This reduces the workload and makes for a faster processing also.

Cheers,

Thanks for the responses gents.

I'm just trying it again now in Autostakkert and I've reduced the file height and width in the Autostakkert window. If that doesn't work I'll try it in PIPP.

Cheers

I reduced the file size from 1920 x 1080 to 1776 x 1000 and changed the stack options from TIF to PNG and it was able to complete the stacking process.

If I reduce the file size in PIPP instead would the result be better?

I am surprised your PC was using that much memory! I have stacked twice that size with half of that computer. Granted, my laptop was pissed at me afterward, but it got it done. I think I was also buffering, though.

I am wondering if you also had a background process (virus scan?) running at the same time? That can eat up the resources that Autostakkert would otherwise employ. Seems like whenever I initiate a lunar capture my virus scanner cranks up.

Must be something about the Moon...:D

It's a 4 year old laptop with the half assed i7 4710HQ chip! And the hard drive is nearly full up (with astro images!!!) so it can't do buffering. Having said that, it should do better, I'll have a look at what else is running.

There you go, with a faint trace of Europa and Callisto!

I think with a bit of imaging practice, some more processing practice, less haze, more elevation and a darker sky, I'll get the hang of this astro imaging thing!

Graeme, did you run the stack through Registax for wavelet sharpening? That can really enhance the cloud bands.

Nice image!

I've just done another run from same target, same night but with the Canon 600D (APT Planetary live view recorder (jpg)) and reduced the image size in Autostakkert to 640x480. It processed without a hitch! I've deleted some crap from the hard drive too so Autostakkert is buffering now.

If I had waited, Io came out from behind Jupiter an hour later!

I'm not seeing any detail in your newest image. As a recommendation, use your original video file and put it through PIPP. First, make sure the file you are using doesn't exceed 3 minutes in duration, or if the file is longer than 3 minutes make sure the frames that PIPP keeps doesn't exceed a time span greater than 3 minutes. Next, tell PIPP to A) reduce the size of your image down to 640x480 centered around Jupiter, and B) Tell PIPP to "rank order" your images and only keep the best 1,000 frames or the best 10% (whichever is greater, watch the time span). Take this new file produced by PIPP and then run it through AS!2. I think PIPP does a better job of cropping and centering and rank ordering than does AS!2. Let us know how this turns out for you.

Lastly, if you could create a signature for yourself describing your gear it would help us give more accurate answers based on your "actual" gear.

Cheers,
JT

The second image was taken using the Canon DSLR so it was a much wider field of view. (1200 jpgs from APT live view) And it is a bit over exposed to highlight the Jovian moons. The first one was a 1000 frame SER file with the GPCAM2 290C and 0.5 reducer. I've had a go cropping the image in PIPP and stacked the best 80% as you suggest. Then a bit over sharpened in Gimp. It's probably under exposed. So I need to go for 3 minutes then and probably keep an eye on the histogram. A bit less haze would be useful too!

Hi there Graeme, your jupiters look great . your Jupiter look a lot like mine. I have heaps that are looking ok but never great . I think its just a matter of that one clear night and you will have a great image. if conditions aren't right its always going to be a bit fuzzy. Its all about practice I suppose and getting good at photshop and being ready for that one great night ..
I know that Ill never be great with photoshop and that my equipment is just basic but I did find that when I downloaded other peoples good image data and put them in photoshop it was pretty easy to straight away tweak a good pic out of it , good luck Phill

Cheers Phill

Practice is the key, especially now with both Jupiter and Saturn around opposition. Last night was one of those rare totally cloud free skies but it had been a long day and I had an early start so I skipped it. I'm not working Saturday so Friday I'll be hoping for a clear sky and employing the get in from work, have a kip on the settee, then get out for a night of viewing strategy!
