SGP and Stellarium RA/Dec coordinates don't agree

#1

Post by starfield »

I was out in the desert this past weekend and found myself without an Internet connection. I wanted to set up a sequence on M-33 and so I went to Stellarium and copied over the RA/DEC values for M33. When I went ahead and started the sequence, SGP plate solved on the coordinates and ended up with M33 barely in the frame. I haven't had any problem with sequences created with the Framing and Mosaic Wizard. Is there a better way to do this? What's the difference between the RA/DEC values created from the Framing and Mosaic Wizard vs entering the provided by Stellarium?

Thanks for any help. I'm a bit puzzled and I'm sure I'll need to do this again sometime down the road.

The entire RA/dec grid moves slowly with the precession of the equinoxes. Coordinates should be given with their correct epoch to be precise. Is one of the Jnow and the other J2000, perhaps?

Hi Kathy, I went ahead and set the epoch to J2000 in Stellarium. I thought that was the default but resetting it seemed to do the trick. With those in sync I've got a good synced reference when I'm out of range of the Internet. This means I can let SGP manage the mount and get more sleep on my camping trips! Thanks for the pointer.
