Best program for Win10?

#1

Post by dilipjadhav »

Hey,

So I do a little astronomy, mostly just astro-photography, though. Anyway, I am looking for the best program for Windows 10 to allow me to visualize the sky at my location, or see a good representation of the star field and other phenomenon on my computer. I have seen Star Chart and Stellarium, and many others, but I was curious if this sub would know the best. Preferably free.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forums!

There is a free program called Stellarium that will do what you want it to and then some.

For your android phone, tablet or IOS device Skysafari is the best but it is not free.

Eyeballs, binoculars, sketch box, Scopes n stuff.
Some people don't understand why I love astronomy so much, I cannot understand why they do not!

I use Stellarium on my imaging pc, my laptop, tablet and phone.

It ticks all the boxes.

I don't think you'll find something else as visualy striking with usability over stallerium , you can even take a 360 panaram image with your phone or camera and upload it in stellerium to give you visual aid of what parts of the sky are being blocked visualy ,ie neighbours house, street light ectt .

I've been playing around with Stellarium on W10, it had a great feature that let's you change the date and time so you can see what you'll actually see at any given time, past or present.

All of these titles work on Win 10. They are Stellarium, Cartes du Ciel, SkyTech X, and Computer--Aided Astronomy (C2A), and all of them are FREE. The only difference between any of these programs is the user interface.

All of them allow you to make a custom horizon all of them have a real time clock or the ability to set any date/time you choose or any location on Earth you choose. All of these titles except C2A have real image mode this is where the more you scroll into a section of the sky it reveals a real photographic image. Additionally, all of them will connect to and slew your ASCOM controlled telescope mount to any object. All of them will allow you to superimposed on the sky chart a circle representing the field of view of any telescope and eyepiece combination or telescope and camera combination you have. Along with many other high-end features.

I use and recommend all four. Each has their strengths and weaknesses.
