Re: A smarter habitat for deep space exploration
Hmmm, a habitat that may be able to maintain itself by using AI. As an Engineer (retired), I am intrigued by the idea and would like to see more. As a plain old person, I might be concerned that the AI could eventually figure out that without humans there, it could run the system more efficiently and require less maintenance. Fodder for another what could go wrong with AI in control movie?
Thanks for the interesting article!

Instead of "Terminator: Rise of the Machines" we could have "Optimizer: Rise of the AI".smp wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 6:44 pm Hmmm, a habitat that may be able to maintain itself by using AI. Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.

Re: A smarter habitat for deep space exploration
I recently picked up a book from the local train station sharing shelf with a plot of humans building a master computer to guarantee the survival of humanity. It does this by forcibly resettling humans on other planets, controlling all travel between planets, killing anybody who appears to be a threat to the prime directive by sending Terminator-like drones after them, and destroying any technology that humans could use to harm themselves.
