A little nerdy but I thought it was interesting.

I would have said VxWorks right away because I worked at Wind River for 14 years. RTEMS is new to me but I haven't kept up. There are many choices of RTOS (including none) but of course reliability is important. More recently, SpaceX started using Linux boxes that are not radiation hardened. They simply make them double or triple redundant and add a good system for detecting crashed OSes and rebooting them. That way software development can be much more efficient.

For LEO missions I suppose that's okay. Not sure how reliable it would be in a decade long to Saturn. Any thoughts on that?
