Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak wants to clean up space junk with new company

#1

Post by smp »

From Space.com:
"Apple's co-founder plans to bring disruption to a new industry: the long-standing effort to clean up dangerous space junk.

Steve Wozniak said he plans to make a private space company "unlike the others" in a cryptic tweet Sunday (Sept. 12). The tweet included a link teasing his planned company, called Privateer Space."

Thanks Stephen. As an interesting side note Wozniak previously founded a company called Wheels of Zeus (WOZ) back in 2005 or so. It went public via a SPAC (special purpose acquisition company) which are very popular right now. That way, companies can go public without much regulatory scrutiny by the SEC. It didn't last long however.

Hopefully Privateer will be successful - it's goal is certainly worthwhile.

The goal is certainly laudable. The open Question hasn't changed; Who is going to pay for this service?

Perhaps it says in the articles, I did not read them - but where is all of the junk going to go when they collect it all?

We already have too much junk and garbage on the planet. I know we don't want to leave it in orbit.....so....where does it end up?

Not really a problem. Don't forget that at least 90% of every launch is boosters and propellant.

That would fit neatly in any municipal land fill.

Separate thought; I wonder how much we could learn by returning at least a few long duration space craft for detailed analysis? Could we uncover some additional points of failure that would aid in increasing the reliability of future craft? The LDEF was decades ago

I think that most schemes for clearing space junk involve deorbital incineration.
