Re: On this day in history, Apollo launch.
It was the middle of the afternoon in the UK, and I had to dash home after school to find out if the launch had gone well. It was well that the TV had continuous coverage, and they showed the launch again later that evening. A real feeling that something truly historic was taking place.

This was 5 years before I was around - but I am excited that today is the 50th.
Considering watching the launch from the DVD set I have tonight.

I was just over a year old. Back then South Africa had no television, so radio only.

Re: On this day in history, Apollo launch.
I wasn't around yet for another year. I do remember the last couple of Apollo launches however. I've been watching quite a few of the documentaries this week on the topic at the Science Channel, National Geographic Channel and PBS.

I was 20, engaged and very well remember the event. Also memorable was Walter Cronkite's emotional reaction to the landing.

If you are on Twitter then go and look back at the time line for @apollo50th.
During the day they have posted events as they happened on the day.
Been super cool and interesting.
Here are two screen shots from twitter to wet your appetite.

I was onboard a Navy LST, off Yankee Station in Viet Nam. I was on my twin gun mount so was a little busy at the time! Lol! But the Captain sent the messenger of the watch to all stations to inform us of the successful launch. Everybody was cheering but I couldn't hear it! Lol! Bill

Re: On this day in history, Apollo 11 launch.
I was almost 12 and had cut out all newspaper articles about the Moon mission throughout the Apollo project. It was a great time to grow up in freedom and wonder. The space race was on the radio news almost every day, then came the 60s then the computer age in the 80s, all while the world population was still manageable. The next generations will have a much harder life with difficult choices. I feel very lucky having watched Armstrong set foot on the Moon live. If I had to choose in what time frame to live all over again it would be the same. The Moon mission was a monumental event.

Does anyone know what the first food was that the astronauts consumed after they landed on the moon ?

A cut and paste from the linked article below.
The Apollo crew even dined on thermo-stabilized cheddar cheese spread and hot dogs during the moon mission, bringing at least a bit of America in July to the sterile flight craft. And yes, there was bacon — foreshadowing the current bacon craze, the first meal eaten by man on the moon was none other than bacon cubes, coated with gelatin to combat crumbs.

Re: On this day in history, Apollo 11 launch.
I was also a teenager and spent hours glued to the TV. I kept running back to the gas station where an older friend worked, to get a fold up cardboard LEM. I must have built six or eight of them. Had them all over the house.
Any metaphor will tear if stretched over too much reality.
