Grand Fleet of Space Telescopes - 2nd Generation

#1

Post by seigell »

The soon to be completed 2020 Decadal Survey features the 2nd Generation "Grand Fleet" of Space Telescopes proposed to replace the Spitzer-Hubble-Chandra Fleet which has done ever so much for modern Astronomy.
Flagship Missions proposed in 2020 Decadal Survey

Amongst the "Flagship Scopes" proposed:
  1. HabEx - ExoPlanetary Investigation via 4-meter Scope operating across UV-Visual-IR utilizing a Star-shade Detached by ~76,600km acting as a Coronagraph ( https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/habex/document ... 5_2019.pdf )
  2. LUVOIR - "Large UV Optical Infrared Surveyor" - similar in design to the James Webb but equipped for the broader spectrum. Proposed at two optional sizings (8m or 15m Primary) to minimize JWT budgetting/build criticisms ( https://asd.gsfc.nasa.gov/luvoir/design/ )
  3. LYNX - X-Ray observing telescope to supplant Chandra - 20x FOV, 100K Pixel, 5x higher spectral resolution Instrument ( https://www.lynxobservatory.com/ )
  4. Origins Space Telescope - 5.9m IR Scope with permanent onboard cryogenics plant to replace Spitzer ( https://origins.ipac.caltech.edu/ )
