With liftoff set for today at 17:17 GMT (18:17 CET, 09:17 PST), the Copernicus Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich satellite is poised for liftoff – atop a Falcon 9 rocket on the launch pad at the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, US.

Yup I first heard a rumble that made the windows shudder a bit, after a few minutes a loud bang followed as the rocket hit Mach 1. I did not go outside but I knew it was planned at 9:17 AM, the sound takes about 2 or 3 minutes to get here. The viewing site near Vandenberg where onlookers usually gather was closed because of the Covid restrictions. The Nextdoor website is full of messages about what the heck happened.
