What we need is some capture the flag shenanigans where Russia flys to the moon, pulls out the American flag and puts the Russian flag in place and thus this capture the flag play takes place thus others are more eager to progress in the "space race" to visit other planets which results in more human space travel which the human race is lacking.. We need you Russia ..

You're reminding me of the Bugs Bunny episode where he is dueling the Martian for the rights to the moon. An automatic band emerges from a pod and plays Yankee Doodle Dandy and hoists a flag that says "earth". This was somewhat before the Apollo missions. Can't find the clip on youtube because of copyright stuff, otherwise I'd post it. About as serious as all these shenanigans.

As often with today's news the words were taken out of the content. Russia is not claiming the Venus. They just have been good at exploring it. So, Venus is a Russian planet in a sense that it is special to them. Like Russian ballet, Russian figure skating or Russian vodka.

While I am not keen on claiming a planet either, I have to agree with Andrey on his understanding of this. They have been good at exploring Venus for quite awhile now. Most of the few usable images of the surface of Venus that we have are from the Russian Venera missions. You can read more about these here, at:
