Betelgeuse
I have been hearing reports about our favourite red giant getting a little less shiny. I haven't had chance to look at the pretty Orion signature star for a while since we've had some serious smoke haze from bushfires.
Wl it was nearly clear tonight so I had a gander. Not only is it dimmer, it is nearly less than Alnitak in apparent brightness. Colour is very light orange as well.
Keep an eye on it, somethings gonna happen.

Re: Betelgeuse
Hrm first I have heard of this. You sure it wasn't just the smoke filtering color / luminance?

Re: Betelgeuse
There are 2-3 discussions of this over the last while, I imagine it will start to brighten again soon.

Re: Betelgeuse
Yup, had a small break in the constant cloud deck last night, and estimated it to be just brighter that Bellatrix on the opposite shoulder of Orion. Bellatrix is listed at mag 1.64, so I would estimate mag 1.5 about right. Dimmest I have seen it in my long lifetime. It usually rivals Rigel!
Keep watching,
Steve

Re: Betelgeuse
I was out viewing it on New Year's Eve, and to my eye it was no brighter than Bellatrix. At all other times it easily outshines Bellatrix.
