SN 2019ein in NGC 5353

This type 1a supernova seems to be on its slow decline in brightness. Sky Tools 3 lists it at mag 13.5, while this site http://www.rochesterastronomy.org/super ... ml#2019ein lists it at 13.7. A check of the AAVSO shows observations estimating its decline into the bright end of the 14th magnitude range. With the moon currently in play this comes at a bit of a challenging time for visual observers.

NGC 5353 is a lenticular galaxy of magnitude 11.0. Its angular size of 2.2'x1.1' yields a surface brightness of about 11.8. The galaxy is part of the Hickson Compact Galaxy Group 68 in Canes Venatici. Below is a chart for anyone wishing to attempt visual detection. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip Alan. Right now this one might be a bit tough at home because of the twin factors of LP and the moon. I have a dark sky trip planned for the next favorable moon cycle and would love to spot it if it is still within reach of the 18" at that time. At this point the chart is not showing up for me, will have to check into that.

Looks like I will claim a miss on this SN. Between soupy, bright Moon, and now rain and thunderstorms, I can't seem to get a scope pointed at these lately.

It is indeed going to be difficult if it continues to dim. It came along at a poor time. But there will be others as we know.

I see it is now listed at mag 13.9, so definitely on the slippery slope down. We may visit the dark site property this Fri/Sat. If so, and I get an opening, will give it a shot with the 17.5".

Interestingly, I have seen some data showing its brightened (13.6 one source and 13.8 another). However, posted observations at AASVO show it in the bright end of 14th mag range. We still plan to be at the other site Fri/Sat, so will check it out.
