Hanny's Voorwerp

#1

Post by seer »

I first found out about Hanny's Voorwerp when I was reading through THE TOTAL SKYWATCHER'S MANUAL last night. It just briefly mentions it at the end of 139. This morning I tried looking it up on the internet and my charts. It is not on my charts but from the RA and DEC given it looks like it is close to 8 or 11 LMi.
Here are a few links.

Can I view Hanny's Voorwerp with any of the telescopes that I have? :Astronomer1:

You won't be able to see it visually. It might be possible to capture it photographically. I have seen one amateur image of it: https://www.astrobin.com/334562/?nc=user

Aside from the technical feat of capturing it and understanding what one has captured, it is pretty unimpressive.

Here's the Hubble APOD image. There's no way we are seeing that with our amateur gear.

Incredible. I've never heard of this target. Will have to read up on it.

Just a followup. I was doing some reading on this object. Visual magnitude estimate is 19. When I think that the limiting magnitude under perfect skies with a 30" is between 16.7 and 17.1....this one is out of reach for any amatuer scope unfortunately.

That said...I'm still gonna try with my 15. 😜

The Hubble image link posted by JT is pretty cool.
I could not read anywhere in these links what van Hanny was using to discover this. Does anyone know?

Was found by a citizen scientist using zooniverse.
