Sigma Orionis?

#1

Post by mikemarotta »

From Burnham's (page 1305), I have Alnitak at RA=05h38.2m and Dec=South 01deg 58 secs.
I know that my Field of View is 80 minutes. (52 degree Ploessel 17 mm with F=660 mm; so 52 / 38.84 = 80 minutes arc)

I used the FOV to mark off the distance below Alnitak, itself an easy target.
Burnham's (page 1274) shows Sigma at RA 05 36.2 and Dec 02 38
So, the math seems to work out. I drew this. Sigma Orionis group is at the bottom.

I went back on the 17th because just scanning the Belt area earlier, I sketched this. 17mm with 2X Barlow.

That is a really pretty area of the sky, which I normally go to earlier in the year. (too much light pollution to the west) I normally swing up to Sigma after viewing in the Orion Sword region, though I am not sure why. It is just seems to be a fun view.

Thanks for sharing your sketches. I enjoyed them. :)
