Hi Graeme and all. The winter solstice this year is on Saturday, December 21st at 11:19 pm EST, and is the "shortest" day of the year, and marks the start of the winter period in the Northern Hemisphere. This is because the tilt of the Earth’s axis is least aligned with the sun, providing us with the least daylight of the year. After December 21st, the nights will begin to get shorter again as our planet rotates towards the sun. It is the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere.
I referenced Sankta Lucia Day in my birthday party for MartinF in Sweden earlier, as he enjoys it. My wife is 3rd generation Swedish from Skaraborg, and she remembers when she was young, her grandfather used to tell here how the girls would wear candles on their heads on this day. St. Lucy's Day is widely celebrated across Scandinavia, in Italy, and also some other countries. One girl is selected to be Saint Lucy and one boy is selected to be Saint Stephen.

2: Part of the tradition was a celebration of light, against the long dark winter nights.
3: While gingerbread cookies were served, the adults and parents later enjoyed a delicious warm Glogg, a spicy wine Scandinavian beverage.
