Mercury Transit - 11/12 November 2019

#1

Post by kt4hx »

Just a reminder to folks about the coming Mercury transit in November. You can find details at the below link, which includes time tables, maps and animations of what the transit should look like from your location. Not everyone around the world will see this, but it is at least partially visible to a great many. Good luck and always remember the main rules of solar observing - 1) safety first, 2) always follow rule #1! :)

Thanks Alan - I've been planning in my head what I am going to do that day

I work from home on Monday's so I should be able to see a good chunk of it, and I believe the whole event is visible, assuming that no clouds appear (not a good assumption for November in the Northeast.

Thanks for the heads up. It's a shaky time of year weather wise but I might get lucky.

Thanks Alan! Here's hoping for clear skies! I plan to setup in front of the library...like we did for the August 2017 solar eclipse.

I'm gonna have clear skies and reasonably comfortable temps :)

Now just need to choose a scope to use.
I have filters for the 127 Mak and the ST80, the ST80 is calling me because it's easier to find the sun, but the Mak has the magnification...
Clear Skies,

Good luck Jeff. Weather is supposed to be clear here too according to the forecast but there could be some morning fog. I can see it creeping in through the golden gate from my perch right now. I'm working on my pinhole viewer/camera obscura right now. It was pointed out on another thread though that the image of Mercury is going to be quite small. If I can't see it I'll just watch the transit on the web. Various outlets are showing a live stream, including NASA.

Been hoping for this since Remembrance Day last year. My forecast for tomorrow? Snow, snow, and yet more snow. It's already started, actually.

Of course, Tuesday and Wednesday are predicted to be stunningly clear... The next time this happens, I'll be 66. At least it gives me time to plan...

Looking forward to everyone's posts on this!

I am looking forward to hopefully getting some frames in I am seriously thinking about live streaming it. It's gonna be so hard to see my cell phone screen with the glare from the sun beaming on it, I'll have to figure some thing out but before I live stream I am gonna make sure I get a lot of captures in different ways, gonna be using my 5 SE. All I can do is hope no clouds and hope nothing happens to my stuff before I get started. I really want to buy a Coronado PST but currently building up credit so I can at least buy a CPC 1100. Got a job now get paid every week just a matter of saving up and paying off my current loans.

No local live transit for me. Only live stream if any observatory is well placed to do so.

High milky clouds here, mixed with total overcast. I have a fuzzy image using the 300mm on the Canon, hoping for some clearer glimpses as the day progresses, although the weather folks are indicating that is a fools dream.

Heavy rain all morning, and then it cleared just after the beginning of the transit. It is clear now, but the sun is dropping low down in the UK now, and will hit the trees pretty soon. Now the power company has turned off the power! I'm not going to complain. I got 2 hours worth of observing the transit. Now to see if I got any good images.

I missed the '1st contact' because of cloud, but I just about got the second at 1237 UT - although still through quite a bit of cloud.

Many thanks.

Typically, it cleared up quite a bit after that. Here are 4 shots combined between 1239 and 1244 UT

Thank you for posting this image.

I was geared up a week ago, but this morning is deep cloud cover.

Thanks again for sharing.
