Ceres Traversing Hyades

#1

Post by Graeme1858 »

Dwarf planet Ceres will traverse the Hyades this month making it easy to spot and track. I got this one from the very excellent Binocular Sky Newsletter by Steve Tonkin.

Today Ceres is just over half a degree to the South East of Aldebaran and closing in. On the 5th of November Ceres is in very close conjunction with Aldebaran and will be easy to spot. Could be tricky from the UK what with all the firework smoke! In the middle of the month it's about in the middle of the open cluster. Then the dwarf planet continues on through the Hyades for the rest of the month. On the 19th a full Moon sits above the Hyades.

I think I'll go and have a look now!

Regards

Graeme

Thanks for the tip Graeme. If I ever get any clear skies on a day off I hope to image it. Maybe even do a bit of a timelapse of the motion if I can capture it over consecutive nights.

A time lapse would be brilliant!

Good luck with the clear skies.

I just checked in Stellarium. Even if I can only get out one evening. It's moving so fast that taking an image every hour or so will easily show the movement.

Good observation. I'll have the telescope set up in the next couple of weeks. Might well give that a go! Until then I'm getting some binocular action in.

Here's the view from here right now. I might have to wait a couple of hours tonight till it rises some more.

Here's an animation I did of two images taken 1 hour apart of Vesta (4) passing near the Leo Triplet a while back.

Spied it in my 11x70s! I had to wait for 10 minutes or so but then a faint dot came into view.

According to Clear Outside it will be clear outside tomorrow too!

No chance of spotting that from home but I should be in rural Michigan by the end of the week. I'm going to have to figure out what astro gear I can sneak in to my cargo.

Just spotted the asteroid again tonight.

Not quite where Stellarium and Cartes du Ciel say it is though! Same last night too. It is reported as being East of a line between Aldebaran and 89 Tau but I see it as just West of that line.

Anyone else locate it?

Regards

Graeme

Nice catch Graeme!

This is a not to miss opportunity for observers to add an asteroid to their collection. Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt and the first asteroid discovered hence #1 designation in the asteroid catalog. It is at 7.8 magnitude now. Easy to spot with binos or small scope.

So much for watching Ceres pass through the Hyades, it's been cloudy here all month! However, there's a clear night forecast for tonight. I've printed a Cartes du Ceil star chart for Ceres, it's on the North edge of the cluster now!

Nailed it!

Quite easy to find tonight midway on a line between δ Tau and γ Tau, even with the Moon, just past full, not too far away.

Anyone else had a look?

Had to have a look at the Moon while it was there. The 4 craters, Langrenus Stevenus etc on the Eastern limb looking excellent in the terminator shadows.

Regards
