is it possible that i saw the grs?

#1

Post by messier 111 »

hi every one ,

I am currently looking at Jupiter, I can clearly see a transit of a moon. I have no idea which on the other hand.
I see what seems to me to be a pretty big red spot right next to the shadow of this moon.

here are my geographic coordinates,
Ottawa Canada
2021-10 - 11.
local time 8 pm.
I tried to find it on the internet, no results.
thank you for your help if possible.

thank you so much,
I was sure I could see the shadow well, but as to the red spot I was uncertain.
so my operation to my eye is more than satisfactory, it is fantastic.
thank you again for your research.

Here as a resource that "Bladekeeper" intruduced me to a number of years ago. I have found useful. It will aid your identification of Jupiter's moons as well as let you know when the grs will be in view.

Thank you for sharing your GRS triumph. That is a very satisgying view!

Thanks for the links!

I have not been able to see the GRS yet myself. I'm probably going to get my next equipment upgrade too late to see it this year.

I also could not see the GRS until I got a 8 inch dobs and then only on a clear winter night when Jupiter was in a great position , but since getting better eyepieces, etc even my 5 inch SCT its there , but its also observing experience , dont expect to see much if you are inside and go have a look , you need time for your eyes to adjust , the biggest problem in astronomy is the human eye
New for astronomy for us visual is here and unfortunately due to such a small market will take a lot longer than say cellphones , has anyone been to an observatory where you actually look into an eyepiece ? all the ones I have been to have computer screens

Have you used the function that simulates the view through your scope + eyepiece combination?

Dude, which of your refractors were you using?
the Takahashi 100 DZ, or the Skywatcher 120 ED?

Either one would do it. I have used the Sky & Tel GRS app to chase the target, but found it when I was not searching, just looking. Like you, I was not certain at the time, but checking the website validated the find.

Nailed the transitions while taking breaks from Jupiter to enjoy the stars with my 16x80 ED binoculars. Stayed out to observe the Great Red Spot. Jupiter was a real treat this evening. Was able to get 200 magnification later during the observation, but not for long. Most of the evening was at 171 magnification. My next observations of Jupiter shown in the two images below.
